cante ( song) – the cante expresses a collective feeling through an individual
it is what you do with the materials that makes it precious
‘ Like the sliver of bone that becomes a holy relic; so the objects are transformed by the presence of the believer, by the one who writes their stories: they become the vehicles for our dreams, the mediums of our memories.’

paper and light
.
This light shade was made from tissue paper, white paper, cut up paper doilies and clear drinking straws.
Depending on the light source, it changes during the day, sometimes almost translucent, other times very stark. When the light is turned on, it is different again.
light n. 1. that which makes things visible, or affords illumination : all colours depend on light...

here are some quick snaps of the installation at e.g.etal

pipe cleaners
.
this little series of pipe cleaner work also forms part of the installation at e.g.etal.
It is grouped together on one wall.
I thought that as the title of this installation is the magical cycle of days, the work made needed to reflect almost a child like approach to working with materials and the materials themselves needed to be very simple and immediate.

black

To answer the question, "What do the words red, blue, black and white mean?" we can, of course, immediately point to things that are those colours. But our ability to explain the meaning of these words goes no further.

sample
.
In 2003 I was in an exhibition called Sample, put on by e.g.etal.
This is the proposal I put forward for the exhibition.
Looking back now I am a little shocked by it, in that I would probably not do something like this now. But I think that making this 'sample' was very important as it helped clarify the direction that I was going in for my work.
I made a 'sample' of the work that I was making, which was my Masters folio.
The drawings were of pieces that I was making at the time and the text was my actual Masters proposal.
The edges of the pages are lined with calico that has samples of embroidery stitches.
this is the text that I wrote that accompanied this piece:
I have made a sample of my own work.
A 'sample' being a small part of anything becomes for me in this instance, a fragment of a thought process of which I have been exploring for many years.
What I intend to create is found in the images and words contained in the 'sample'. In the exhibition, e.g.etal printed the first lines of my Masters proposal and put it beside my work:
As a child I used to collect houses. They were very small and could fit in the palm of my hand.
I also had small boxes filled with collections of precious objects, such as shells, buttons, lace, and jewellery.
Treasures of a child.

This work forms part of a series of 5 works on paper.
From this series I have made the objects depicted on paper. The vessels and boxes are all made from copper and steel wire. This is the only collage that has not been turned into a box (the solder joins! the thought alone does my head in), but I think that it is my favourite

woollen blanket house
.
This woollen house was part of my exhibition These are the things that hold me here ( a house, a vessel, a shell, a ring) held at Craft Victoria in 2004. It has been in a box in my laundry since then. Recently I took it out to show someone and it ended up on top of my bookcase in the hallway, where it seems to have stayed. It is made from an old army blanket and has a long tail of thread coming out of a side pocket.
I guess that reflects a principle of all my work: I never show a human being or whole body; instead, I depict objects related to the person or a part of the body. You could say the spectator himself supplies the whole body in question. Usually the object is something the spectator could wear, use, eat or relate his body to.
Claes Oldenburg
In my sculpture, its not an image I'm seeking, it's not an idea. My goal is to re-live a past emotion. My art is an exorcism, and beauty is something I never talk about. My sculpture allows me to re-experience fear, to give it a physicality, so that I am able to hack away at it. I am saying in my sculpture today what I could not make out in the past. It allows me to re-experience the past, to see the past in its objective and realistic proportions...
...Since the fears of the past are connected with the functions of the body, they re-appear through the body. For me, sculpture is the body. My body is my sculpture.
